Damien's Shockley pulls
out all the stops
By Steve Ramirez,
Staff Writer, San Gabriel Tribune
LA VERNE -
Walker Shockley is the Damien High School water polo team's last
line of defense. But there is more to his value to the Spartans
than just his ability to block the opposition's shots. "He
allows us to take chances," said Damien coach Andrew Gates of
Shockley, who will be back in goal when the Spartans continue
Sierra League play today at Chino. "We can get up on the counter
a little more, simply because we know, more often than not, he's
going to block the shot. We can give up a (low-percentage) shot
knowing that he's going to stop it. "He really provides us with
a sense of security and a nice safety net behind us."
The senior has
been a major factor for the Spartans, who once again are one of
the top teams in the CIF-Southern Section. Damien, which
recently clinched its ninth consecutive Sierra League title, is
21-6 and ranked No. 4 in Division 3. Shockley has keyed that
run, stopping 245 shots to rank among the best in the area. He
also has 27 steals and 24 assists.
Strangely
enough, Shockley didn't start his water polo career by playing
in front of the net. But he soon realized it was the perfect
position in the pool for him. "I was in fifth grade and had been
playing field for about six months," Shockley said. "Then my
coach said, `You're really tall. Let's put you in goal and see
what happens." A lot.

Foothill co-coach Cody Bell of Upland said. Six of the 13 players had earned college scholarsips.
"Its great to see a player who is unexpected come through and shine.
She (Stanford) led the game in scoring and deserved the award," Bell added.

Donohoe
awash in talent
Damien's water polo standout has few peers
By Steve Ramirez, Staff Writer
Article Launched: 10/20/2008 11:36:24 PM PDT
LA VERNE - If Damien High School water polo coach Andrew Gates wanted
to, he could make Brian Donohoe the focal point of the Spartans' offense and
the senior would be quite productive.
But it's doubtful the Spartans still would be one of the top-ranked teams in
the CIF-Southern Section.
Damien's strength comes in
numbers, which include Donohoe and David Purington on the inside and Walker
Shockley in goal. Donohoe has a team-high 72 goals in 14 games, along with
50 assists.
"Brian is arguably the
best player in our area this year," Gates said of the senior, who was
first-team all-area and second-team All-CIF last season. "There are others
who are very good, but he ranks right up there, and I think he is head and
shoulders above everybody else. . . .

CHAWP's
Dement Keeping Busy
(story taken from USAWP web site)
7/29/2008 12:00:00 AM
Summer vacations are supposed to be about enjoying yourself, relaxing, and
taking some time off. Unless of course you are CHAWP goaltender Caitlin
Dement. The 17-year-old recent graduate of Ayala High School has been
through USA Water Polo's version of the gauntlet the last two weeks. She
started off on July 22 in Northern California with the Women's 20 and Under
National Championships, which ran right into the Women's National
Championships, and now she finds herself minutes away from jumping in front
of the cage for her squad at the 2008 S & R Sport Girl's Junior Olympics.
Dement had done the 20 and
Under into the Junior Olympics before so she kind of knew what to expect,
but the Women's National Championships removed the normal break for the UCLA
bound freshman. "For the Women's Championship it was a mentality thing, it
is more just telling your body to keep going because it is definitely a
higher level," said Dement. Playing with some of the older crowd also will
help prepare Dement for the collegiate scene which will be on a different
level than club and high school. "Especially playing with the women it is
good preparation, you realize that's the level you need to play at all the
time," added the former Youth National Team goalie.
The CHAWP team, short for
Chino Hills Area Water Polo, took 9th in the 20 and Under and then 11th in
the Open Championship but Dement has eyes on something better at JOs. "I
would like to end up in the gold medal round, if we stay focused we can
definitely make it," she concluded. But one last question, she must be sick
of water polo by now, right? "No, not yet," she said with a laugh and with
that she was right into to the pool for CHAWP's game against Great Lakes.

ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: Malia Pahoa,
Temescal Canyon Girls Water Polo
By: The Californian -
Update:
Pahoa has scored 61 goals this year, good for second in The Valley and tops
on a team that ranks third in the CIF Southern Section Division V poll. The
Titans last won the Southwestern League title three years ago, and Temescal
will lean heavily on Pahoa during the league tournament, which begins today.
Birthday: July 17, 1990
Age:
17
Last movie you saw in a theater:
"The Golden Compass"
Last book read not for school:
"That will take a while; I read a lot. Probably 'Dark Angel.'"
Hobby: Drawing.
Pre-game routine: "I try not to think about the game. I try not to
psyche myself out."
Favorite sports moment: "Just
winning as a team, not as an individual."
Favorite pool to play in:
"Mine" - The Titans are 3-1 at their home pool this year.
Future plans: Will major in
veterinary science at Cal State Bakersfield, where she will team with
Temecula Valley's Kerinn Fields at the budding Division I water polo
program.
Coach's quote (from Temescal Canyon coach Damien Andrews): "Last
year, she was kind of a non-impact player, but she had a great offseason
playing club (at CHAWP). She got some great exposure and some great
experience and she came in this year and is one of my best offensive
players. Considering the schedule we've played this year, we don't have too
many games where we've ran teams over. We've had a lot of close games and a
lot of tough games. ... I'm excited for her (prospects next year). Any time
you have a chance to play at the next level, it's exciting. Anytime you have
someone who does well in the classroom and is a hard worker, you like to see
those kids get rewarded."
