ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: Malia Pahoa,
Temescal Canyon Girls Water Polo
By: The Californian -
Update:
Pahoa has scored 61 goals this year, good for second in The Valley and tops
on a team that ranks third in the CIF Southern Section Division V poll. The
Titans last won the Southwestern League title three years ago, and Temescal
will lean heavily on Pahoa during the league tournament, which begins today.
Birthday: July 17, 1990
Age:
17
Last movie you saw in a theater:
"The Golden Compass"
Last book read not for school:
"That will take a while; I read a lot. Probably 'Dark Angel.'"
Hobby: Drawing.
Pre-game routine: "I try not to think about the game. I try not to
psyche myself out."
Favorite sports moment: "Just
winning as a team, not as an individual."
Favorite pool to play in:
"Mine" - The Titans are 3-1 at their home pool this year.
Future plans: Will major in
veterinary science at Cal State Bakersfield, where she will team with
Temecula Valley's Kerinn Fields at the budding Division I water polo
program.
Coach's quote (from Temescal Canyon coach Damien Andrews): "Last
year, she was kind of a non-impact player, but she had a great offseason
playing club (at CHAWP). She got some great exposure and some great
experience and she came in this year and is one of my best offensive
players. Considering the schedule we've played this year, we don't have too
many games where we've ran teams over. We've had a lot of close games and a
lot of tough games. ... I'm excited for her (prospects next year). Any time
you have a chance to play at the next level, it's exciting. Anytime you have
someone who does well in the classroom and is a hard worker, you like to see
those kids get rewarded."
